VeriWave Launches Voice-over-WLAN Service Assurance Test Suite
Test Suite Combines VoIP and with IEEE Standard QoS Protocol to Validate Wireless Service Level Agreements (SLAs)
PORTLAND, OR - June 26, 2006 – VeriWave, Inc., the leading provider of performance analysis tools for wireless local area network (WLAN), today announced the VoIP QoS Service Assurance Test, a suite of tests designed to validate and ensure Service Level Agreements (SLAs) in high performance Voice-over-WLAN (VoWLAN) networks. The test suite equips vendors, integrators and enterprises with a tool allowing them to extend the same predictable performance achieved in traditional Voice-over-IP (VoIP) enterprise applications to WLANs and converged wired / wireless network infrastructures.
Designed to increase test coverage and automate the test environment, the new test suite enables equipment manufacturers to identify bugs early in development and QA cycles, and to reduce time to market while cutting costs and optimizing deployment of triple-play wireless networks.

The issue of offering diverging quality of services to different traffic types has been addressed by the IEEE in its Quality of Service Enhancements standard: IEEE 802.11e. The standard is considered of critical importance for delay-sensitive applications, such as Voice over Wireless IP and Streaming Multimedia.
VeriWave’s WaveTest system introduces comprehensive qualitative and quantitative WLAN testing based on client emulation. The new VoIP QoS Service Assurance Test Suite scales to emulate hundreds of stateful WLAN clients and delivers R-Value and MOS measurements used to determine a network’s ability to offer and guarantee voice service level agreements. The new VoIP QoS suite provides an automated, repeatable approach to measuring call quality and determining a network’s service level capacity and assuring compliance with service level agreements.
The industry’s first qualitative and quantitative testing for QoS-based VoWLAN applications, the test suite includes:
- The Service Level Capacity Test. This test determines the capacity of the WLAN infrastructure to support specified high priority VoIP traffic for a given Service Level, by measuring the maximum number of voice calls supported for a given SLA (voice call R-value / MOS score) in the presence of a given low priority background and best-effort traffic load.
- The Service Level Assurance Test. This test determines the Service Level Agreement (SLA) break-point of WLAN infrastructure equipment handling a constant VoIP call load in the presence of changing best effort traffic load, by measuring the achieved Service Level of high priority (voice and video) traffic as background and best-effort (low priority) traffic changes. This validates complex usage scenarios through changing traffic patterns
- The Service Differentiation Test. This test determines the performance, capacity and call quality metrics offered by infrastructure WLAN equipment in the presence of multiple VoIP calls and data traffic, when utilizing the rules defined by the 802.11e standard.
